Isla de la Plata - Ecuador
The Isla de la Plata (Silver Island) lies just to the south of Manta about 20 miles off the coast of Ecuador. The name derives from the silver ingots left by sir Francis Drake at the end of the 16th century. The island is known as Ecuador’s other Galapagos because of its abundance of marine birdlife. It is part of the Machalilla National Park and boasts a seabird sanctuary with more red-footed, blue-footed and masked boobies, albatrosses and frigate birds than the Galapagos islands. The surrounding waters are alive with flying fish, dolphins, whales, sealions and turtles. The following 8 cruises call at Isla de la Plata.
