Qingdao - China

Qingdao or Tsingtao is located on the south coast of the Shantung Peninsula in north eastern China at the entrance to Kiaochow Bay, one of the best natural harbours in northern China. It is major industrial city, a large fishing port and an important cultural and educational centre. The German Concession, not far from the port, is a dazzling display of European architecture including a Catholic cathedral and a Protestant church near the entrance to Xinhao Park. The old district surrounds Guanxiang Hill and Fulong Hill just near the city centre. You can also take a tour of The Tsing Tao Brewery that produces an excellent lager that is exported world-wide using antique brewing eqipment. There are also half a dozen fairly pleasant beaches and some resort facilities in the city. Qingdao was a tiny village until German military forces landed at the port at the beginning of the 20th century. From being a small fishing village, its prime strategic position led to maritime trade and Chinese, German and Japanese naval control of the city. The following 10 cruises call at Qingdao.
