Angers - France
Angers is a city in western France, about 190 miles (300 km) southwest of Paris located on the River Loire. Before the French Revolution Angers was the capital of the historic French province of Anjou, home to the Plantagenet dynasty. The old medieval centre La Doutre is still dominated by the massive chateau of the Plantagenêts with its massive stone walls and the extraordinary Apocalypse Tapestry housed within. From here you can visit the stunning chateaux of the upper Loire Valley including the Renaissance Chateau d'Azay, built on a small island in the River Indre, the gardens of the Chateau de Villandry and the fairytale Chateau d'Usse. This charming 15th century building, all roofs, turrets and towers, is reputed to have inspired the story of the Sleeping Beauty.
