Tonle Sap - Cambodia
Tonle Sap (Tonle Lake) in Cambodia is connected by the Tonle River to the with the Mekong and Bassac Rivers merging at Phnom Penh . This is the great lake of Cambodia and over 93 miles (150km) in length. Here bird life is profuse and there are a number of floating fishing villages. Due to seasonal high winds and water navigation on the lake can be very tricky. During the June-to-November monsoons, the swollen Mekong reverses the southeastward flow of the Sab River, which increases Tonle Sap's area from about 1,050 square miles (2,700 sqkm) to about 4,000 square miles (10,360 sqkm); its depth also increases permitting vessels with 9 feet (3 m) of draft to navigate it up through the various tributaries, on which are situated the towns of Kompong Thom, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Pursat.
