West Point is the site of the United States Military Academy in Orange County, New York, on the western bank of the Hudson River, about 50 miles (80 km) north of New York. It lies in a scenic area south-east of Storm King Mountain and the reservation, which covers about 16,000 acres, also includes Constitution Island in the Hudson River.The United States most famous fortress, West Point was first occupied as a post in 1778, and was established as a school for military engineers in 1802. It is the alma mater of such military heroes as Grant, Pershing, MacArthur, and Eisenhower, and the entire post is now a National Monument. Tour the grounds and historic buildings and visit the Cadet Chapel and the Old Cadet Chapel, which stand at the entrance to the Academy's cemetery. At Trophy Point, view the most famous vista along the Hudson. Nearby is Kykuit, home to three generations of Rockefellers and one of the finest and best-preserved Beaux Arts mansions in the nation. The estate's gardens are stunning, with hilltop terraces that surround the house and afford spectacular views of the Hudson River. Here, explore one of the most intriguing sculpture gardens in the country, with works by Picasso, Brancusi, Henry Moore, and Louise Nevelson.
