Fort Jackson - USA, Louisiana
in 1815 General Andrew Jackson defeated the British in the battle of New Orleans and realised the strategic need to fortify the mouth of the Mississippi River. In 1822 work began, and in 1832 Fort Jackson was completed. During the Civil War, Fort Jackson was the site of a decisive victory for the Union. In 1862 Farragut besieged the fort and, after a ten day exchange of artillery, he succeeded in moving his force up river where they captured New Orleans. Today, the original fort is very well-kept and many of its original battlements are still remarkably intact. There is also a museum that is worth a visit.
