The historic town of Monterey lies on a peninsula at the southern end of beautiful Monterey Bay on the Pacific Ocean about 135 km (85 miles) south of San Francisco. Formerly the Mexican capital of California and a whaling and fishing port, Monterey is now mainly a tourist town. Sights include the Old Custom House (1827), the First (California) Theatre (1844) and other historic buildings in the Monterey State Historic Park, a Maritime Museum and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Nearby at Pacific Grove is the entrance to Seventeen Mile Drive a scenic coastal route that runs to Carmel. Points of interest along the way include Seal Rock, Cypress Point and Lone Cypress as well as six golf courses. Founded in 1770 by the Spanish, it was capital of Alta California and Mexican California until it came under American control in 1846 during the Mexican War.
