Ilheus - Brazil

Ilheus lies at the mouth of the River Cachoeira, some 460 km south of Salvador de Bahia. Home of Brazil's most famour writer, Jorge Amado, this town has some excellent beaches nearby and several churches including Sao Jorge (1556) where there is also a small museum and the huge, early 20th century Cathedral of Sao Sebastiano. In Alto da Vitoria is the 17th century Nossa Senhora da Vitoria built to celebrate victory over the Dutch. The area produces the biggest part of Brazil's cocao and this stretch of coast features deserted beaches, cocunut groves, native rainforest and cocao plantations.
