Kirkwall - UK, Scotland

Kirkwall is the capital of the Orkney Islands, that lie just off the north eastern tip of the mainland of Scotland. It is an early Norse trading town of stone houses and narrow lanes, situated on Mainland Island, the largest in the group. Visit St Magnus Cathedral, a red-and-yellow sandstone building with a spire that dominates Kirkwall that has been drawing worshippers for 800 years. Even this time scale is eclipsed by the 5,000 years-old enigma of Skara Brae, a Neolithic village at the edge of the sea that lay buried and preserved by sand until it was discovered in 1850. Examine its series of stone rooms and furniture, which bear silent testimony to the way our early forebears lived. Also see the Standing Stones of Stenness and Ring of Brodgar -- both ceremonial circles 5,000 years old. There are more than 30 cruises calling at this port.
