Gelibolu - Turkey
Gelibolu (also known as Gallipoli), owes it importance to its strategic position at the narrows of the northern end of the Dardanelles. It is situated on the narrow Gallipoli Peninsula forming the northwestern side of the Dardanelles in European Turkey. The town is centred around it colourful fishing harbour which is divided by a stone tower - from the original Byzantine Callipolis. The city has long been strategic in the defence of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople). From here you can take the Battlefield Tours of the Peninsula that was the scene of an ill-fated major military campaign in World War I, the so-called Gallipoli and Dardanelles campaign to secure the Dardanelles and access to the Black Sea for the Allies.
