Flint Island - Republic of Kiribati

Deserted Flint Island is one of many idyllic tropical atolls forming the Southern Line Islands, part of the Republic of Kiribati. This narrow coral island was once home to a thriving guano industry and a failed copra plantation. Now the island has been left to the birds, the sea, and the rare and enormous coconut crab, a species largely eliminated elsewhere due to hunting it for food. Snorkel, bird watch, and explore the island on foot. The island became part of the British protectorate of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1916 and part of the independent Republic of Kiribati in 1977.
