Masira Island - Oman

Masirah Island is a sparsely populated island located some 15 miles off the southeastern coast of Oman. Here the birdlife is prolific with over 300 species recorded and the island is also an important breeding ground for turtles including the leatherback, which can grow to over 1500lbs. Strategically placed, the island until recently housed an RAF base, and in the 16th century the Portuguese built a fort to protect their trading interests. It was also a staging post for Imperial Airways on their flights to the Far East.
