Muroran - Japan
Muroran is situated on the south coast of Hokkaido Island at the entrance to Uchiura Bay. Originally a small village it has grown since 1900 to become an industrial port serving the cities of Hokkaido. Nearby is the Shikotsu-Toya National Park containing numerous volcanoes, crater lakes and hot springs resorts. Closest are Lake Toya, Japan's youngest volcano Showa Shinzan and the extremely active Mount Usu. Hokkaido is the northernmost and second largest island of the Japanese archipelago, and is situated between the Sea of Japan to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The island is about 450 km (about 280 miles) wide and about 420 km (about 260 miles) long and is heavily forested.
