Burano - Italy

Burano island, in the Venetian Lagoon is a flourishing centre of fishing ,laces and tourism. One of the most colourful of the lagoon islands, its waterways are lined by brightly painted shuttered house. In the 16th century the delicate local lace was sought after in Europe. The market slumped in the 18th century but the skill was revived in 1872 with the founding Scuola dei Merlitti, a lacemaking school. Attached to the school is a museum displaying fine antique lace. Today authentic Burano lace is hard to find an expensive.
