Grado - Italy

The island town of Grado lies close to the border with Slovenia at the top of the Adriatic Sea east of Venice. It is isolated amongst lagoons at the end of a causeway and has a small historic centre but is mostly a large modern resort. The beaches are good and in the historic centre you will find the restored 6th century Basilica, an octagonal 5th century Baptistry and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Eleven km away is Aquileia, a Roman colony founded in 181BC that offers a wealth of roman remains and a glorious Basilica, one of the most important monuments of early christendom.
