Komaron - Hungary

Komaron is a little town on the River Danube and home to Fort Sandberg, the largest military fortress in central Europe during the 19th century. It was well known as the defensive line protecting the Danube and Vienna. Across the Danube river is Komarno, one of the oldest towns in Slovakia and boasting many beautiful churches and religious monuments. The fortress here began as a 13th century castle, reconstructed in the years 1546-1557, to form the largest bastion fortification in Central Europe. From here you can also visit Szentendre, known for its museums (most notably the Open-Air Ethnographical Museum), galleries, and artists.
