Puerto Cortez - Honduras

Founded as the Villa de Puerto Caballos in 1524, this port on the north coast of Honduras close to the border with Guatemala has become the main commercial gateway between Honduras and the world. Puerto Cortes has probably the best four-lane highway in Central America and is connected with an excellent road system to most of Honduras' main tourist attractions. This port city sits on a bay backed by the Alvarado Lagoon. The climate is hot, tempered by sea breezes, many beautiful palm-fringed beaches nearby, and plenty of rainfall. From here you can visit the Omoa Fortress, with its lush green gardens and massive walls, the city of San Pedro Sula and Copan, a ceremonial centre of the Old Empire of the Maya and one of the most important archaeological sites in the western hemisphere.
