Qassiarsuk - Greenland
Qassiarsuk is a settlement in South Greenland with green fields dotted with white sheep, lush vegetation and busy farmsteads; this forms a colourful contrast to the icescapes at sea. Nearby is Brattahlid (meaning "steep mountain"), the site of Erik the Red's homestead and the first Norse settlement (982) in Greenland. At Brattahlid stood probably the first church in the New World: Thjodhild's church, actually a small chapel. A recent reconstruction of this chapel now stands near the actual site, along with a replica of a Norse longhouse. (Erik himself did not profess Christianity, but according to legend his wife converted him on his deathbed.) The following 5 cruises call at Qassiarsuk.
