The Gambier Islands are in the south-eastern part of the Tuamotu Archipelago, in the southern Pacific Ocean. MangarevaMangareva, the group's largest island, is the site of the chief settlement, Rikitea. Products include phosphates, pearls, and copra. Several of the islands are used by the French for nuclear testing. The islands came under French protection in 1844 and were annexed in 1880. The group is part of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia, lying to the east of Tahiti, in the eastern South Pacific Ocean.The archipelago comprises about 80 atolls extending, in two parallel chains, over a distance of 1,400 km (870 miles).
