Verdun-sur-le-Doubs lies in the mouth of the River Doubs where it joins the River Saone. It is located in the Saone-et-Loire department of Burgundy has one of the finest waterfront quays of any on the Saone. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD, it was once had an important shipyard here. Verdun has a town square which overlooks the river and is lined with shops, medieval streets in the St-Jean quarter and a Museum of Wheat and Bread.
