Vandenesse-en-Auxois - France

Vandenesse-en-Auxois is a quiet village near the summit of the Canal de Bourgogne in the Cote d'Or department of Burgundy. It gives access to the beautiful village of Chateauneuf (actually Chateauneuf-en-Auxois), a tiny hilltop settlement with encircling walls standing on a low rocky spur. At one end is the turreted Chateau de Chateauneuf-en-Auxois which once played an important defensive role on the road to Autun. The chateau and surrounding village were built in the 12th - 15th centuries while the church was built later in the 15th century. The village contains many fine merchant houses from that period, built in the local yellow-white stone. There are more than 30 cruises calling at this port.
